Comprising terrain so remote that it was the last to be mapped in the contiguous United States, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument received designation in 1996 as nearly 1.9 million acres of protected lands. Since that time, some of the greatest paleontological discoveries have been made there, including new species of tyrannosaur and ceratopsid dating back 80 million years.
Aside from being a playground for geologists, paleontologists, archeologists, and historians, GSE also offers us regular folk with access to unmatched beauty in the form of ancient petroglyphs, waterfalls, slot canyons, monoliths, hoodoos, natural arches and bridges, as well as, endless landscapes. However, in 2017, twice-impeached Donald Trump tried to reduce the size of GSE by 47% in order to pave the way for short-term mining gains. We think that was a dumbass move.
Bears Ears National Monument was designated in 2016 to protect roughly 1.35 million acres of lands teeming with historic, cultural, and natural significance. Bears Ears is home to various First Peoples including branches of the Navajo Nation, Hopi, Ute Mountain Ute, Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, and the Pueblo of Zuni. According to "Bears Ears: A Native Perspective", this land is considered by some Navajo people to be Nahodishgish or a "place to be left alone."
Bears Ears is home to over 100,000 distinct protected archeological sites that include thousands-year-old cliff dwellings, rock art, kivas, weaponry, baskets, villages, among other irreplaceable artifacts. Additionally, it fosters some of the best canyoneering, rock climbing, and vistas in the world. Well, can you guess what tiny-hands Trump did back in 2017 when he was busy trying to screw up GSE? He also tried to reduce Bears Ears by 85%, you read that right, 85% reduction in protected lands.
We shoot you straight here at LOLA and this is a plain-as-day robbery. We're not going to stand for all the oil, gas, and mining grifters to make a dime off these areas. We ask that you support us in our effort to permanently restore both GSE and Bears Ears to their original sizes.
We legitimately thank you for any consideration you may provide.
We are dedicated to fighting to protect our wildlands and wildlife.
Your generosity provides us with the necessary means to bring the battle to the front door of the money-grubbing goons who see Mother Earth as a paycheck.
When we send you something, it has a purpose.
